The ICE Bar in Hongdae

Tonight we went out into Hongdae with our new friend Meredith, one of the American teachers at our school. She is from Texas and a lot of fun. We had dinner together (chicken kabobs, sweet and sour shrimp and a mixed tempura platter) and then roamed the streets soaking in the Seoul nightlife. We stumbled upon one of the best places we have been to to date...the Ice Bar, a bar made entirely of ice. Seriously. Everything. The entire bar was inside a huge refrigerated room. The actual bar, the walls, the seats, the cups...all carved out of ice. There were random ice sculptures in every corner...it was amazing. It was -5 degrees Celsius inside and had been created by a Korean ice sculptor. We each had a drink in our chilly carved ice cube cups and relaxed on giant blocks of ice with fur skins draped over them so our rear ends wouldn't stick to the ice, hahahahaha. It was an experience like no other.

We paid our 15,000 won to get our fleece moccasins, thick parkas and gloves, as well as one drink. It was money well spent, the experience was amazing. We had a lot of fun chilling out, literally, haha.

  1. Marie, this is the second time you have been in a place made completely of ice. When I was pregnant with you, your father and I went to Quebec City in February. Unlike your refrigerated ice bar, what we went to was outside, construced in the frozen temps of the North. We visited the Ice Castle Hotel - a hotel made entirely of ice that you can sleep in. It was amazing to tour the different rooms. We skipped the stay over and went to the Hotel Frontenac. Warm, toasty, and wonderful food!
