Hello 2010!

Happy New Year! We hope the New Year brings happiness and peace to all of our families and friends. We miss everyone and love you all!

Nick and I had a wonderful New Year's Eve. We have lazed about on the beach soaking up more sun (just like yesterday haha). We had a tasty little dinner right on the beach in Jomtien and then walked on the beach during low tide. It was early still but people were everywhere, setting off fireworks and having evening picnics. The Thais were setting up miniature hot air balloons that they would send off into the air. It was like a giant white plastic bag that had a large candle attached to it. They would send a wish for the New Year up with the balloon. The white balloons with the candles floated all through the sky and made it twinkle with fire. It was beautiful.

With a little difficulty due to overcrowded buses, we made it into Pattaya and hit up Walking Street. Hundreds of people spilled out onto the streets, dancers were in all the clubs, costumed vacationers and laughing people were everywhere. Whole roasted pigs were being carved up and meat was being sold by street vendors. Music swirled around everybody and everything. We saw people with monkeys, pet lemurs, parrots, and more roaming the streets. It was mayhem.

Nick and I found an outdoor bar that was right on the sidewalk that led to the beach. The bar was actually a converted VW bus with a fun bartender and good music pouring out of the open roof. We positioned ourselves so we could see the now thousands of people crowded on the beach. Larger and more extravagant fireworks burst over us constantly. Midnight was rapidly approaching.

When the New Year arrived a collective cheer rang out up and down the beach. Fireworks tripled in size and in frequency. Dozens of white balloons were set off into the sky and everyone was joyous and in good spirits. It was a memorable sight. We were very glad we got the chance to witness it.

We stayed on the beach for a little while longer and then took a crowded pick-up truck home. This morning we slept in late and now we are off to the beach (again). We wish everyone a Happy New Year and a great 2010!
